Route

13-days / 12-nights

Set out from the capital of the Tanimbar Islands of Saumlaki, on a cruise across the Banda Sea, ending in the port Maluku capital of Ambon. Dive the remote archipelago of the south-east Moluccas (Maluku Tenggara)!

Start diving at Dawera Island with a chance to visit to the village in between the dives. There is a seamount off this isolated island, which in our eyes counts as one of the best dive sites in the world! The local villages don’t even fish here because they can catch all that they need from the surrounding area. It has hardly been dived either, hence an immaculate, untouched reef so full of fish you don’t know where to look. On the current side the entire reef is covered with pyramid butterfly fish and when they mix in with the hundreds of neon fusiliers and surgeon fish the colourful effect is striking. There’s a resident school of thousands of big-eyed trevallies that zoom back and forth across the dive site. A big school of batfish also make this pinnacle their home. White tip reef sharks, eagle rays, grey reef sharks and, most excitingly, silver tip reef sharks have been spotted here.

Other Forgotten Islands we may visit are Dusborgh, Nil Desparandum, Nus Leur and Terbang. All the dive sites in the Forgotten Islands and in the Banda Sea are characterised by endless reefs and spectacular deep walls covered in soft corals, sea fans and huge sponges. Schooling and individual hammerhead sharks have been spotted at some of the these places along with rays, other reef sharks and turtles. Anthias decorate the reefs, especially in the shallows. On many dive sites you can drift along watching thousands of anthias sprinkled above the reef, suddenly scurrying for cover when a bigger fish swims by or a scuba diver blows out bubbles, only to emerge again to dance in the current. We call them confetti fish because it looks like someone is tossing up a load of colourful fish!

Now you will head away from the Forgotten Islands. Our trips to the Forgotten Islands are for true explorers and those divers seeking out something new and unusual, as we take you from one secret paradise to another. The Forgotten Islands are part of a remote archipelago in the south-east corner of the Moluccas (Maluku Tenggara). The port of Saumlaki - capital of the Tanimbar Islands - is roughly 600 kilometers south east of Ambon and further east than East Timor (roughly 630 kilometers east of the capital Dili). Despite the remote feeling in other parts of Indonesia (such as Alor or Banda), the Forgotten Islands are isolated even by Indonesian standards, covering an area that spans from the West Papua area of New Guinea all the way to the island of Timor.

The first stop to get to Banda islands is at the most eastern volcano in Indonesia – Manuk. Here sea snakes seem to like the conditions because they are abundant. They are very curious and you will soon get used to them coming at you from all directions to take a sniff at your fins or even your face!! Hammerhead sharks have also been spotted here. Manuk attracts frigates and brown and red footed boobies so surface intervals are spent watching these birds souring above the volcano.

Not only will you dive the Banda Sea but you’ll also get to visit the legendary Spice Islands. Most widely known as one of the main stops along the old spice route, the Banda Islands are rapidly gaining a reputation for having some of the best diving in the country. The remoteness of these islands in the midst of the wide expanses of the Banda Sea has given it a fascinating, colourful history, including the fact that it was once a home to exiles of all sorts. Unlike other areas, with high populations and subsequent pressure from fishing, the Banda’s relatively small human population has been a blessing for divers – offering a vibrant, healthy reef system rich in biodiversity. Fish are present here in incredible numbers along with huge gorgonians and sponges and some truly monumental hard corals.

Always a very popular land excursion is the tour of Banda Neira in the Spice Islands. Disembarking by the old colonial balustrades of the seafront hotel you will feel that you have stepped back in time. The clean, quiet streets of Banda Neira are a pleasure to stroll around. The quaint little museum is the first stop on the tour with our guide Jufri. He shows us a gruesome painting depicting the violence that took place in 16th and 17th centuries when Europeans tried to be a part of the Asian trade of spice. An old diving helmet is one of the other artifacts on show in the museum. A short stroll up the hill will take you to the old Dutch fort with wonderful views over the harbour and to the neighbouring volcano. The town is so peaceful and undeveloped that it feels like this view really hasn’t changed in centuries. Back down the hill on the other side and through a nutmeg plantation our guide demonstrates how to pick the ripe nutmegs. Jufri even strips some bark from a tree for you to discover that it is a cinnamon tree. The fresh smell of spices assails your nose. The final stop on the tour is at the plantation owner’s house for a mid-morning snack of cinnamon tea and nutmeg cake and jam under the shade of the cocoa tree.

Next we dive close to Ambon at Nusa Laut, which showcases the positive effects of a village taking care of its reef. The reef remains as unspoiled as it was hundreds of years ago. The locals have taken steps to protect it and the result is an outstanding site that is the favourite of many dive enthusiasts. Look out into the blue for eagle rays, hammerhead sharks, thresher sharks, turtles and even dugongs have been seen here!

Ending the trip by diving in Ambon Bay. Diving in Ambon Bay should be at the top of your to-dive list. The sites are a hidden treasure of amazing critters, including the recently discovered species of frogfish (the psychedelic frogfish) but also Rhinopias, mimic octopus, zebra crabs and dozens of different nudibranch species. A very popular find is the eponymous Ambon Scorpionfish in differing hues of red, pink, green, yellow and orange, keep an eye out for many other members of the scorpionfish family too, including the spiny devilfish, stonefish, zebra lionfish, ragged-finned lionfish and leafy scorpionfish – all venomous but gorgeous! Harlequin shrimps, ghost pipefish, ribbon eels, tiger shrimps, pink and yellow leaf fish, leopard shrimp, mandarin fish, thorny seahorses, zebra crabs and Coleman shrimps on the fire sea urchins, crocodile fish, the list can go on forever!

In terms of water temperature and recommendations for wetsuits, for most dive sites in Maluku, Banda and the Forgotten Islands you can expect 25-30C+ (80-86F+) so a 3mm wetsuit or even a skin suit is usually fine. We also don’t recommend gloves as this can encourage divers to touch.
